Regional Qualification Method
  • Advancement to Regionals for 2010 will be based on the Rankings List . All skiers meeting the following criteria Thursday morning July 15, 2010 (the official Cut Off Date) automatically qualify for Regionals.

    Level 6 in any event or overall except for Mens 3-4 slalom in which a skier must be ranked Level 7:

    At the cutoff date the Rankings List Average of the last ranked skier in each division in slalom, tricks, jump, and overall will be established as the Cut Off Average (COA) for that level. Using the example, the level 7 COA for men’s 4 slalom is 84 buoys and the level 6 COA for girls 3 jump is 49 feet.

    After the Cut Off Date any skiers who did not receive an automatic invitation may still qualify for Regionals in any event or overall through three Last Chance Qualifying methods (LCQs):

    • (1) any skier who increases his average equal to or above the COA anytime after the Cut Off Date up until registration closes for his event at Regionals;
      Using the example below, if Jim increases his slalom average to 84 buoys, he is qualified; if Holly increases her jump average to 49 feet she is qualified. Once you are qualified you can not become unqualified so even if Mark, Brian, Ana, or Holly’s averages fall down to the next level it does not matter nor does it change what the COA is.

    • (2) any skier who records a score equal to or above the COA at State Championships or at any tournament class C or above event between the cutoff date and regionals;
      Using the example below, if Tony runs 84 buoys or if Janet jumps 49 feet at State they are qualified for regionals

    • (3) any skier who places in the top three (3) at State. Using the example, if Jim places 3rd at State with 10 buoys or if Holly wins state jumping 30 feet they are qualified.

    Any skier who has a valid Open/M55K rating, or is qualified for nationals at the cut off date is automatically invited to Regionals as well.

    Some key elements of the rankings list:

    • To view rankings once you get to the site, select, rankings, then national –AWSA, then choose your division and event. DO not use the midwest region filter.
    • The National Rankings formula uses the average of a member's top 3 scores in slalom, tricks, jump, and overall over the last 12 months. Only one best score is used from each tournament.
    • To improve statistical accuracy, minor penalties are applied when a member has 'less than the minimum' number of scores. The penalties for fewer than minimum scores are 5% if you only have 2 scores and 10% if you only have 1 score. So if your average is 60 buoys but you only have one score it would go down to 54 buoys (10% of 60)
    • Ranking values are calculated with the association's “Equivalent Scores” methodology, which combines scores from any division that a member skis, provided the performance conditions of Boat Speed (S/J) and Ramp (J) are the same. Tricks is always equivalent. This means when you move up a division you do not have to start over with scores if the parameters are the same.
